Joining the Research Group

Applying to our graduate programs

I’m actively recruiting PhD and MSc students to join my research group.

Admissions are handled by the department, rather than by me individually, so the best way to reach me is to apply to one of our graduate programs at UBC. I’ll review the application of qualified candidates who mention in their application that they are interested in working with me.

Note that students are admitted to the program rather than to a specific research group and students typically have a year before committing to an advisor. In your application, it is acceptable to express interest in multiple potential advisors and in some cases, it can be natural to be co-advised by two faculty members.

Sending a separate email will not affect the outcome of your application. I currently receive more inquiries than I can respond to. Even if I don’t respond to your email, you still receive full consideration when you submit an application.

If you are a graduate student on campus…

…in statistics or in another field, you can reach out to me to discuss research opportunities and collaborations.

If I’m teaching a graduate class, enrolling and doing a final project in that class is a great way to connect.

If you are an undergraduate student on campus…

Currently, I do not have specific opportunities for undergraduate students, however I’m open to working with an exceptional candidate over the summer.

I encourage undergraduate students to take courses with a final project requirement. Final projects are meant to get students working on an open-ended question (which is exactly what research is), give you a framework to get feedback from faculty and provide a great way to assess mutual fit.
